Chris Dobbelaere provides answers to RRP.RO questions

1. What do you think about the increasing usage of medication (drugs and medicine)? Shouldn't we use more natural products?

We must be careful with the medication throughout the racing season. A month before the racing season starts, we go to the vet. If something’s wrong, we give the correct medication. We look to create a good condition among our pigeons when the races start. If everything goes well, we don’t give any medication. On the other side, if a problem occurs, we go to the vet. Too much medication will kill the good condition of the birds.

2. How far do you go with the widowhood during the racing season. I mean, after how many races do you switch to the natural system?

My system with the racing pigeons is simple: my cocks are never shown the hen when basketing. The only thing I show is the nest bowl. The cock gets his hen only after returning home. At the beginning of the racing season, he can stay with his female only for a short time (15 minutes). Further in the races, he can stay longer, up to 1 hour. If he returns in the evening, they can stay together for the whole night.

3. How do you stimulate your widowhood birds? Is there a certain technique or everything depends on each bird?

I think I explained how I stimulate my pigeons on question no. 2. In the past, I sometimes used to show the hens to my racing cocks before basketing. This was the day before, and then I put straws inside the loft, but the results were no better. So I keep it simple: if the pigeon is in good health and in good condition, and especially if he’s a good one, the results will come.
